I see that everyone has already posted about everything the could possibly be wrong with this unit, so I’ll spare you of another sordid review.
However, I caught on to another issue: the reputation of the RCA name. Sorry, fellows, RCA isn’t what it used to be. The grand old conglomerate was merged into the General Electric business about 20+ years ago, which split it up and transferred the GE/RCA consumer electronics business to Thomson, a French company. Just a year or so ago, Thomson split off the RCA product lines to various companies around the world.
Of the half-dozen lines of products featured on the [...] site, they are actually different far-flung companies making products under license for the use of the RCA logo from Thomson. The brand is available to anyone who will pay a fee; Thomson is not responsible for the design, manufacture, distribution or servicing of any RCA product.
As a result, the RCA brand is no more reputable than any of the odd brands that you see in the lesser stores. RCA is no longer a premium brand that your father respected and you grew up with. If the actual manufacturer of that DVD gizmo actually cared, then it would have recalled and destroyed all of the units that never should have left the factory.

I have had my RCA DRC 8335 DVR-VCR for about six months. This is my second machine and I am still having trouble with it. I thought a six head unit would give me better video from my tapes, but it has not. In both cases the machines got to a point where all they would say is HELLO-HELLO-HELLO over and over again. Would not take instructions from the remote nor would most of the front panels buttons work. Tried all the usual fixes, holding the off buttom until it shut off. Un-pluging the machine from all cables and letting it sit overnight with not cables or power to it. This thing is run by a computer and what I think happens is the boot up sequence fails. There needs to be a way to acess these machine from a laptop with a diagnostic program to get them up and running again. The motherboard needs a Cmos battery backup for the software and default reset so no matter what happens, it can do a fresh boot from memory if need be. I finally open my unit up and took a look inside, I would say the problem is that these units and there are many out there being manufactured by various companies are just not built as well as they could be. Every computer needs to be reloadable off a CD and these DVR-VCR machines need to be the same way.

I ordered and received the DVD/VCR combo and it was DOA. They were very responsive and sent me an RMA to return it. Another unit was sent. It still did not work. I received the RMA and packing slip for FedEx and sent the unit right back… this time I asked for a refund. Now they are claiming they have never received the unit so they are not giving me a refund. Now I am out the $100 bucks AND have no DVD/VCR to show for it. I have contacted them and all I get is that they haven’t received it. BIG LESSON LEARNED HERE!!!! Don’t order anything thinking that you can return it if it doesn’t work or isn’t what you expected. They will take the return, but are not giving a refund. This left a terrible taste in my mouth!
