I purchased the product and am very pleased with the quality of the picture. It does upconverting very well and the component output works great. The recording is only done through regular video and audio but still provides a decent picture.

At this time no matter what equipment you buy the highest standards is just 1080p.

Not all films were recorded at 1080p, as with not all films brining wide screen or any other aspect ratio for that matter. Not all films are in color. Not all films are in stereo or surround sound. Many of the newer presentations do take advantage of this technology. In the near future there will be many new technological advances.

The recording media is secondary and negligible to the presentation. People get impressed by the technology and forget that there are other attributes such as story. True better definition and sound is an added dimension; this is worth noting when different presentations make an exceptional difference beyond the standard expectation of HD; otherwise it is a waste of the readers time to say how "cool the presentation is."

For a fraction of the present cost of the different high capacity storage media and blue laser technology, you can buy recorders that playback 1080p. These recorder/players also enhance standard media DVD's to 1080p. They also have HDMI, SD Card I/O. You can play your present digital camera, commercial media collection, and home recorded DVD/VHS in height definition. Thus you can wait for the capacity technology war to settle down/merger or be replaced by the next level of technology right around the corner.

This is not a product review, as rather a Amazon 'shipping-packing' problem. Overall I have never had a problem with Amazon and damaged items, however, here recently on several 'large boxed' electronics and more expensive equipment,(and heavy) the 'packing' has been miserable and not called for. Amazon has placed the item,(which was in the 'original' box and placed it within a larger Amazon marked shipping carton. This of course is a smart idea, (especially for electronics) however, they are almost non-existant on proper innerpacking material to keep the inner box from bouncing from one end of box to the other. All my more current shipments have the outer box with "much damage" and holes-chunks ripped out. Hopefully the main item will be okay, but since they are holiday gifts, I will not really know for several more weeks. Please note that the travel time from Amazon via carrier is less then 300 miles from my home and gets here within 3 days, and still arrives looking like it just traveled "3000 miles". I would hope Amazon takes a hard look on proper inner packing material of some sort. I would hate the hassle of returning damaged items and waiting for a replacement.
