I purchased this product for 2 reasons.

    1) To copy old VHS format to DVD

    2) To record some movies and programs.

Unfortunately only number 1 has worked for me. Number 2 is a failure on my part to do more research of the product. The device wont record any movies that are on the premium channels such as HBO, SHOWTIME, CINEMAX. Once I discovered that I still believed it was worth the money. Then after inserting a DVD movie into the machine I had purchased from Blockbuster, I then started to become skeptical of the product as a whole. In short I’m only able to play one movie at one time (even some brand new movies). The second movie always ejects and on the display window the word “error” is displayed. I thought this was an abnomally, so I decided to try other movies and I can never watch more than one movie on “movie nights”.

This is the worst device I’ve ever purchased. I purchased it new from Circuuit city and since I’ve never been disappointed by a SONY product, I was sure this one would be fine and took a pass on the extended warranty. Beware of this device! I hate this device.

This is my second player with this model and it still freezes during DVD playback. Very frustrating for a machine that costs $217. As I can now see with most other customer reviews, I am not alone with this problem. Sony should at least provide for replacement of this unit with a better model since this is the second model RDR-VX525 that I’ve had this problem with over a 1 year period.

I would not recommend this product. Neither of the two features I need most from this Sony — DVD player and DVD recorder — work.

The DVD player freezes all the time and there’s no way to get past that point (FF, REW, etc. nothing works). Plus, with some DVDs all of a sudden there will be this extremely loud squeal or static sound and, well, that’s the end of being able to watch that DVD. I’ve cleaned the DVD player several times but that hasn’t helped.

We have been able to copy one VHS tape. Other than that we’ve made a lot of coasters. The instructions are terrible, but even when you finally make some sense of them the end result is more DVDs that won’t play. I’ve tried three DVD formats (+R, -R, R/W) and have wasted many hours trying to get this thing to work.

So I gave up on trying to record but the aforementioned DVD player problems keep me from using it at all. At the end of the day all I’ve managed to do is buy a $200 VCR.

I bought this to migrate old VHS home movies to DVD. Know that the unit defaults to format Sony DVDs as video versus the DVD-RW. The one-touch record feature is nice, but you will spend multiple hours figuring out the GUI to do your projects.

I bought this unit a month ago to archive some old VHS home movies. Nothing copyright protected. The unit does what it says it will do, but the output quality is rather poor.

The VCR portion of the recorder is really lacking in quality. On my unit I notice that there are diagonal lines that flow throughout every recording I make. Mind you, these are home movies without copyguards. The overall picture quality is rather grainy. I have thought about attaching a separate VCR to the unit to overcome the issue, but I have not tried that yet.

The DVD player seems to work fine for now. I have had no complaints. It hasn’t frozen on me yet.

One of my BIG gripes about this product is how drawn out the DVD creation process is. The owner’s manual is 127 pages long. That is a lot of garbage to sift through. I majored in Media Arts … I know a lot about video equipment. The backwards way this unit works blew my mind. The editing mode is completely barebones and not ONE single DVD I have created has a menu!!! And I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to create a menu on the DVDs!

So if you want a DVD that is the exact quality as a VHS (or even POORER in some cases) and don’t want the luxury of having a menu, this is the recorder for you. I gave it three sta
